Boozy Black Magic Halloween Cocktail

Boozy Black Magic Halloween Cocktail - featured image

A spooky, smooth, and complex Halloween cocktail made by infusing vodka with black licorice candy strips, balanced with fresh lime juice and soda.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 750ml Good Quality Vodka (e.g., Tito’s or Absolut)
  • 1 cup Black Licorice Candy Strips (real black licorice, e.g., Black Jack)
  • 1/2 cup Fresh Lime Juice
  • Zest of 12 Limes
  • 1/2 cup Simple Syrup (Optional, adjust based on licorice sweetness)
  • 23 oz Club Soda or Lemon-Lime Soda per serving
  • Ice (Large cubes preferred)

Instructions

  1. Break black licorice candy strips into smaller pieces and crush slightly with a muddler to increase surface area.
  2. Place crushed licorice strips into a large glass jar or bottle.
  3. Pour 750ml of vodka over the candy, ensuring the liquid covers the candy completely.
  4. Seal the jar tightly and store in a cool, dark place for 24-48 hours, shaking gently once a day.
  5. Strain the infused vodka through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean bowl. For clarity, strain again through a coffee filter or cheesecloth.
  6. Fill a highball or rocks glass with ice. Optionally rim with black sanding sugar.
  7. In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 oz of infused black vodka, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 1/2 oz simple syrup (if using), and a pinch of lime zest.
  8. Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds until well-chilled.
  9. Strain the mixture into the prepared glass over fresh ice.
  10. Top with 2-3 oz of club soda or lemon-lime soda.
  11. Garnish with a lime wheel or twist of lime peel.

Notes

Do not rush the infusion; 24 hours is the minimum for proper flavor extraction. Avoid heating the vodka as it creates a harsh taste. Use fresh lime juice only; bottled juice lacks the necessary acidity to balance the sweetness. The infused vodka can be stored for up to 3 months.
