Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups (312g) all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4860 candy eyes
  • ¼ cup (60ml) black decorating icing
  • ¼ cup (60ml) red decorating icing (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (optional, for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy—about 2-3 minutes with a hand mixer on medium speed. Scrape down the sides of the bowl halfway through.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract, then beat until fully combined. The mixture should look smooth and slightly glossy. Do not overmix.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. The dough should pull away from the sides of the bowl and feel soft but not sticky. If too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour; if too dry, add a teaspoon of milk.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line your baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  5. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough (about 1.5 tablespoons each) and roll them into smooth balls. Place them on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. You should get about 20-24 cookies.
  6. Gently flatten each dough ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your palm to about ½ inch thick.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are just barely golden. The centers should look set but still soft. Do not overbake.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
  9. Once the cookies are completely cool, use the black decorating icing to pipe eight small legs onto each cookie—four on each side, curving slightly outward.
  10. While the leg icing is still wet, press two candy eyes onto the center of each cookie. The icing acts as glue.
  11. If desired, pipe a tiny red mouth under the eyes using the red decorating icing.
  12. For a darker look, lightly dust some cookies with unsweetened cocoa powder using a small sieve.
  13. Let the decorated cookies sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to allow the icing to fully set.

Notes

Don’t skip room temperature ingredients. If dough gets too soft, chill for 15-20 minutes. Use a light hand with icing—thin lines look more spider-like. Work in batches of 6-8 cookies when decorating so icing doesn’t dry before adding eyes. Keep extra candy eyes handy for mistakes. Cookies stay fresh up to 5 days in an airtight container at room temperature. Undecorated cookies can be frozen for up to 3 months.
