A fun and easy Halloween recipe featuring hot dogs wrapped in torn puff pastry strips with sharp cheddar cheese, creating a spooky mummy appearance that kids love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • Hot dogs (beef, pork, or turkey)
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Yellow mustard
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Black olive slices or candy eyes (for eyes)
  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Thaw puff pastry until pliable but still cold.
  3. Pat hot dogs dry and roll them in a thin layer of mustard.
  4. Roll out pastry sheets slightly and cut into 1-inch wide strips.
  5. Wrap pastry strips around hot dogs in a spiral, leaving ends exposed and creating gaps for a torn look.
  6. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the pastry strips as you wrap.
  7. Press pastry ends gently to seal and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Brush tops with egg wash.
  9. Attach black olive slices or candy eyes to the ‘head’ end.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes until pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  11. Cool for 2-3 minutes before serving.

Notes

The key to this recipe is letting the dough tear rather than wrapping it neatly. This creates the authentic ‘shroud’ look. Keep the pastry cold to ensure flaky layers. Do not overcrowd the baking sheet as the pastries expand. Reheat leftovers in the oven to maintain crispiness.
